Institutional identity, made simple
Studid is an academic verification service. It lets applications confirm a user's institutional affiliation through the university login the user already has — without document uploads, password handling, or SAML expertise.
What we do
Studid is a SAML Service Provider registered in the DFN-AAI federation. Through eduGAIN's inter-federation metadata exchange, we can reach identity providers at thousands of universities, research labs, and academic organizations across 70+ national federations worldwide — from DFN-AAI (Germany) and InCommon (US/Canada) to RENATER (France), SWITCHaai (Switzerland), and GakuNin (Japan).
When a user logs in through Studid, their institution returns a digitally signed SAML assertion confirming their affiliation. We turn that into a single, reliable field — the authIdentifier — that your product can use for accounts and access decisions.
Privacy first, by design
Users authenticate at their own institution. Studid never sees or stores passwords, and personal documents (transcripts, student ID cards) are never collected. The service stores only the minimum session data needed to complete a verification, and sessions expire automatically. The API is built around the GDPR principle of data minimization.
We are honest about what you get: because Studid is not a REFEDS Research & Scholarship entity, many IdPs do not release role attributes. The reliable signals are always the institution's identity and the auth identifier.
Free, and staying free
The core verification API is free — no accounts, no API keys, no rate-limited paid tiers. Future premium features (like country-restricted access or institutional allowlisting) may be monetized, but the verification API itself will remain free.
Where we're headed
We're exploring entity categories (like Pseudonymous Access or Anonymous Access) that would unlock automatic attribute release from more IdPs, and we continuously expand federation coverage through eduGAIN.
